Two points. First, Cuomo is kind of out of touch in a way that even Trump (the billionaire) isn't.

Second, and to your actual point, the reason we should try to support virtuous politicians is that we don't want to have to rely on the system that prevents politicians from breaking things.

Scott Alexander writes that sacred principles are exhaustible resources. I believe systems are almost all like this. Every time the system is invoked, it gets weaker.

A-hole politicians will need to be restrained by the system far more often than virtuous ones. We should support virtuous politicians because they play inside the system. A gentleman's agreement is generally a term used to refer to unspoken rules. Gentlemen, in the old sense of the term, are the only people that can keep a system in good enough shape to resist the occasional knave.

A-holes ping-pong off the barriers just enough to weaken them.

I think Trump's strikes on Iran were necessary. I hate that they were pretty clearly unconstitutional.
